Building Futures: A Summer at Davie Construction Co. | What We’ve Built

As summer wraps up, we’re reflecting on the incredible progress made, not just on our job sites, but by the bright, dedicated interns who joined us for the season. Over the past few months, our interns, Jake Schneider, Hudson Wilkinson, and Cassidy Nichols, have stepped into construction and marketing with curiosity, determination, and a willingness to grow. Their journeys have been as much about self-discovery as about steel beams and social media campaigns. This summer, they didn’t just build structures or strategies, but they built confidence, skill sets, and lasting connections.

For field interns Jake and Hudson, this summer meant lacing up boots, stepping onto job sites, and immersing themselves in the fast-paced construction world. Jake spent his time between the Elon University McMichael Science Center and Elon Day Care projects, witnessing firsthand the dramatic transformation that comes with demolition and rebuilding. “It’s really cool to see a building being demoed and rebuilt and seeing all the change,” he shared. Hudson contributed to projects in New Bern, including the Verdigris Pet Hospital and Weyerhaeuser Office. Watching progress unfold from the ground up helped him see how much can be learned by being present. “I’ve seen lots of visible progress,” he said. “It made me feel like I’ve been a part of the work.”

Both interns have made incredible strides, from mastering hand and power tools to improving their reading of plans and staging materials. Hudson credits the experience with helping him become a better problem solver and communicator. Jake noted how much more confident he feels asking questions and building relationships, a theme echoed by all three interns.

Meanwhile, Cassidy brought her creativity and strategic thinking to Davie’s marketing department. She was key in planning events, organizing volunteer efforts, designing emails, and keeping the company’s social media presence sharp and engaging. “It’s made me feel accomplished and like I’ve made an impact,” she said. Beyond learning platforms like Canva, Mailchimp, and Adobe, Cassidy also stepped outside her comfort zone by visiting job sites and deepening her understanding of the construction industry. “Being a part of the Davie team means being part of a work family,” she reflected. “They took me in and taught me so much.”

The summer was more than a checklist of tasks; it was a launching pad for future careers. Each intern leaves Davie with valuable communication, collaboration, and professional responsibility lessons. Jake emphasized the importance of asking questions. “Don’t be afraid to do things,” he advises future interns. Hudson echoed that thought: “Even when you feel dumb, those are the best times to ask because you learn a lot.” Cassidy said, “Say yes to all of the experiences. Every person at this company has something they can teach you.”

As we close this chapter, we reflect on a summer of visible progress and growth. Our interns leave us with new skills and a deeper understanding of what it means to be part of a team. They’ve helped build projects in the field and strengthened the foundation of our marketing efforts, but most importantly, they’ve built futures.

From all of us at Davie Construction Co., thank you, Jake, Hudson, and Cassidy. You’ve made a lasting impact, and we can’t wait to see what you build next!
