There is no better way to understand construction than by stepping onto the jobsite, and this is something our field interns are experiencing firsthand this summer. For Jake Schneider and Hudson Wilkinson, being in the field with Davie Construction Co. has opened their eyes to what it truly takes to build something from the ground up and the kind of people it takes to make that happen.
Each day on site brings something different. Jake starts with his daily report, but what comes after can change depending on what the project demands that day. For Hudson, mornings begin with a walkthrough of the site to check in with subcontractors, answer questions, and ensure everyone’s aligned. Throughout the day, he pitches in wherever needed, often tackling tasks that fall outside of subcontractors’ scopes. Every day follows its own pace, but the constant changes on site have taught them to stay flexible and think on their feet.
Hands-on experience has been the greatest teacher for both interns. Jake shared how actually seeing the work happen has given him a much deeper understanding than any textbook ever could. It’s not just about learning what gets done, but learning how long it takes, why it’s done that way, and what it looks like when plans change. Hudson added that not everything in the field looks the way it does on paper. Adjustments happen constantly to work around existing conditions, speed up the schedule, or accommodate other trades. Being on site has taught them that flexibility and problem-solving are just as important as technical knowledge.
Excitement in the field gave our interns some unique experiences. For Jake, a highlight was the rush of demolition on a project and for Hudson, it was a 4 a.m. slab pour. But it’s the unexpected challenges that have helped them grow the most. Jake had to think on his feet when subcontractors brought up problems that needed immediate solutions. Hudson stepped up when his superintendent had to step away, managing deliveries and fielding questions in real time. These moments of pressure taught them how to stay calm, communicate clearly, and keep the project moving forward.
Along the way, they’ve built strong relationships with the people around them. Jake mentioned how valuable it’s been to get exposure to subcontractors, suppliers, and inspectors. Hudson has developed a rapport with the equipment rental representative, who visits the site weekly, and emphasized how mutual respect and willingness to help can go a long way in this industry. “When you’re helpful and understanding, people want to go above and beyond for you,” he said.
Both interns have learned that communication isn’t just important, but it’s also essential. Jake pointed out how crucial it is to keep everyone informed, whether it’s face-to-face or over the phone. Hudson noted that even small miscommunications can derail schedules, and that checking and double-checking is always worth the effort. Through their work with the project teams, they’ve also seen that things rarely go exactly to plan and how you respond matters more than the setback itself. Frustration doesn’t fix anything, Hudson explained, staying level-headed does.
Their growth is clear. Jake feels he’s developed most in his understanding of upfits, while Hudson has gained confidence reading and interpreting building plans. And while they’re still exploring what their long-term futures in construction might look like, both agree that this summer has shaped their perspective. Jake shared that he now has a better overall view of the industry. Hudson said he’s learned to embrace mistakes, seeing them as part of the learning process: “Everyone is always allowed to learn because there are new things to discover at every step of life.”
At Davie Construction Co., we believe in learning by doing and Jake and Hudson are proof of how powerful that can be. The field has tested them, taught them, and shown them what construction is all about. And as they take their next steps, they’ll carry this experience with them. Keep up with the rest of our Building Futures series to see how our interns are learning, growing, and building their careers.
